SUBJECTS: ON THE CORONAVIRUS EPIDEMIC IN CHINA

 

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 29, 2020: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO -As of January 29, 2020, 5,974 confirmed cases of pneumonia and 132 deaths caused by the novel coronavirus (2019n-CoV) have been reported by the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China. A total of 60 people have recovered and been discharged from hospital.

 

The National Health Commission has taken prompt and comprehensives measures to curb the spread of the virus, including providing prompt communication and cooperation with the World Health Organisation (WHO) as well as open bilateral communication with related countries.

 

Efforts by the National Health Commission have been recognised and supported by the WHO, who have commended the speed and scale of the implemented actions, the speed at which the virus was identified and the openness in information sharing by the People's Republic of China.

 

The Ministry of Finance of the People's Republic of China has allocated a total of 4.4 billion yuan (4.4bn) (roughly TTD$4.28bn) to support the fight against the outbreak. Travel restrictions, cancellations of gatherings, closures of public venues, postponement of school openings have been implemented in order to contain the virus spread. Additionally, more than 6,097 medical staff have been mobilised to Wuhan to treat patients and medical equipment factories are working at full capacities to produce protective masks and suits to meet the needs of hospitals and health care suppliers.

 

The Embassy of the People's Republic of China to Trinidad and Tobago is closely monitoring entry of Chinese citizens into Trinidad and Tobago. There have not been any suspected cases. The Embassy has updated the Ministry of Health of Trinidad and Tobago on the latest developments in China and will continue to share the latest developments in China.
